The workshop was presented as a “Sufi journey,” rooted in the wisdom of Rumi, yet the introduction dismissed Sufism’s foundation within Islam. There also seemed to be a contradiction in how Rumi was presented. He was acknowledged as a Muslim sheikh, but that aspect felt somewhat dismissed rather than meaningfully integrated. His relationship with Shams of Tabriz, who was also a Muslim dervish, is central to understanding both his transformation and the essence of Sufi practice. It would have been completely valid to say that the workshop focuses on specific elements such as Sema (whirling), meditation, and universal principles—without requiring a religious commitment. That level of clarity would feel more honest and grounded. Another point that raised questions for me was around perspective and context. After the session, I looked into the instructor and became aware of strong political positioning. Given what is happening globally, and that the discussion during the workshop only centered on what's happening in Iran, it felt selective. Sufism, at its core, speaks to unity, compassion, and the idea that no one group of people is more important than another. When that universality isn’t reflected, it can feel at odds with what is being presented. I also found it confusing that traditional Sufi structures—such as guidance from a teacher (murshid) or established orders—were described in a dismissive way, including references to “no rules” or differences in places like Turkey. While it is absolutely valid for someone to choose not to follow a structured path, it’s important to be clear about what is being stepped away from rather than generalising or diminishing it. These structures are not arbitrary; they are part of how Sufism has historically been practiced and transmitted. More broadly, I believe there is a responsibility when presenting something under the name of Sufism to ensure that people are not unintentionally misinformed. It doesn’t need to be taught in a strictly religious way, but the core foundations and context should not be omitted or reshaped. It would also help to have more transparency about facilitators, so participants can make informed decisions before attending. I came into this with an open heart, trusting the way it was presented under the name of Sufism. Taking that leap of faith and then leaving with a sense of disappointment, and at times discomfort during the workshop, is not a pleasant experience. I think that’s something that really needs to be held with care and awareness when offering spaces like this. My feedback has yet not been acknowledged nor adressed.

The workshop reffers to Sufism but there was very little focus on sufism and when information about sufism was shared it was factually incorrect. Whirling was interesting to see and they workshop leaders where very very skilled. The lady expressed it very well: "I don't refer to it as sufi whirling, for me it is just whirling". Calling it sufi whirling entails that sufism is also a key element of the workshop and when that is not part of the key elements of the workshop and when mentioned it is factually incorrect it just leaves you with the feeling of false marketing. Recommendation to the workshop holders is to just call it whirling workshop and mediation and leave out sufi.
